DLSS 5: A modder manages to get it running on AMD graphics cards
Designed for NVIDIA’s GeForce GPUs, DLSS 5’s Neural Rendering now works on select Radeon cards. This is a technical feat, though it remains highly experimental and particularly performance-intensive.
NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 is clearly no longer limited to the company’s own graphics cards. As VideoCardz explains, a modder has managed to get Neural Rendering technology to work on Radeon RX 9000 cards, as well as on RX 7000 models—cards designed by competitor AMD and, of course, not intended for this technology at all. The project relies on a software adaptation capable of intercepting the calls required by DLSS and executing the neural computations on the AMD architecture.

A demonstration was conducted using a Radeon RX 9070 XT in *Cyberpunk 2077* and a few other games, proving that the hardware limitations imposed by NVIDIA can be circumvented, at least in part. In terms of performance, however, the experience is still far from convincing. The RX 9070 XT currently manages only about 30 frames per second at 1080p under the tested conditions, with a considerable computational cost. The absence of the GeForce’s specialized Tensor cores is a major drawback here, even though successive optimizations to the project have already improved the results somewhat. The modder’s ultimate goal is to achieve performance comparable to that of a GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, but that goal remains a long way off from current results.

This experiment therefore remains more of a technical feat than a solution intended for the general public. For now, the project applies to certain DirectX 12 games using AMD’s FSR, while anti-cheat systems may also prevent it from working. VideoCardz nevertheless highlights the significance of this discovery: NVIDIA’s Neural Rendering appears to be adaptable to a competing architecture, which could challenge the notion that certain DLSS 5 features are intrinsically tied to GeForce hardware. Following initial experiments on older-generation RTX cards, modders have now opened up a new playground with Radeon cards.
