For file sharing, you can generate password-protected links with automatic expiration dates, with no restrictions on the size of the files you send. On smartphones, the app automatically backs up photos, freeing up space on the device while protecting your memories in case of loss.
These photos can be organized into custom albums, which can also be shared collaboratively. Proton Drive also includes advanced productivity tools. Proton Docs lets you create and collaborate on documents in real time, while ensuring that teamwork remains strictly confidential. And if you’re not using Proton Docs, there’s Proton Sheets for spreadsheets and tables.

A Turning Point in June 2026 for Performance
During the June update, Proton rolled out a new “engine” for Proton Drive. This SDK (software development kit) is unified across all platforms, and it’s thanks to this that a Linux client will be released.
Furthermore, file uploads are now up to three times faster, significantly speeding up synchronization on macOS or automatic backups on Android, for example. Downloads, meanwhile, are twice as fast.
Perhaps even better, the SDK has improved the cryptographic model to encrypt data up to four times faster in Proton Drive, while reducing battery consumption and heat generation on smartphones.
This SDK also brings Proton Drive closer to the rest of the ecosystem. It enables seamless integration with Lumo, the new privacy-focused AI assistant developed by Proton.
Subscriptions Tailored to Every Need
Proton Drive offers several subscription plans, starting with a free plan called Proton Free that lets you try out the service and provides 5 GB of storage. For more storage and other benefits, you’ll need to pay.
For example, Proton Unlimited costs €12.99 per month (or €9.99 per month with an annual subscription) for 500 GB, Proton VPN, Proton Mail, Proton Calendar, and Proton Pass (password manager).
A Proton Duo plan with VPN supports two users and includes 2 TB of storage for €19.99 per month (or €14.99 per month with an annual subscription). Proton Family supports up to six users and includes 3 TB of storage.
Proton Drive is also included in plans specifically designed for businesses.
