Star Citizen Squadron 42 Delayed Again: Chris Roberts Wants to Avoid GTA VI
Originally scheduled for late 2026, Squadron 42 will ultimately not be released until the second quarter of 2027, with Cloud Imperium Games citing, among other things, the media buzz surrounding GTA VI.
Players will have to wait a little longer before getting their hands on Squadron 42, the highly ambitious single-player campaign set in the Star Citizen universe. While a release had been announced for the fourth quarter of 2026, Chris Roberts has just revised the schedule: the title is now expected in the second quarter of 2027. To explain this latest delay, the creator of Star Citizen points in particular to a major competitor, GTA VI, which is currently scheduled for release on November 19, 2026. According to Chris Roberts, launching Squadron 42 in the final months of 2026 would mean pitting the game against a veritable media juggernaut.
The next installment in the Grand Theft Auto series is expected to monopolize much of the attention of specialized media outlets, content creators, and gamers. Even though GTA VI won’t be available on PC at launch, news about it is likely to remain ubiquitous for several weeks. Cloud Imperium Games therefore believes that a spring 2027 release would offer Squadron 42 a more favorable window to make its mark. The argument makes sense from a marketing perspective, but it’s unlikely to convince the project’s supporters. Squadron 42 has been in development since 2014 and has already undergone numerous schedule changes. The project, initially conceived as a single-player campaign tied to *Star Citizen*, has gradually taken on a much larger scope, with a far more ambitious production and a cast featuring Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, and Mark Strong, among others. This desire to push the boundaries of cinematic video games partly explains the lengthy development process.
However, the decision to target the second quarter of 2027 leaves some room for interpretation. GTA VI will undoubtedly be one of the biggest gaming events of the coming years, but there’s no guarantee that its media influence would prevent Squadron 42 from making its mark. Especially since Cloud Imperium Games’ title is aimed at a different audience and already boasts a particularly engaged community. The new delay can therefore also be seen as an additional opportunity for the developers to finalize and polish the game. Cloud Imperium Games nevertheless intends to provide a concrete preview of the project’s progress before this new deadline. A select group of long-time supporters and specialized content creators will have the opportunity to experience Squadron 42 on October 9 and 10, 2026. This is the studio’s way of keeping its community engaged while demonstrating that development continues to move forward. It remains to be seen whether spring 2027 will finally be the right time for this single-player campaign, which has been in development for years and has been the subject of numerous promises.
