NVIDIA remains number one in graphics cards, far, far ahead of its competitors
NVIDIA's domination of the graphics card sector became even more overwhelming at the end of last year.
The only company in the world to exceed $4,000 billion in market capitalization ($4.32T USD) - far ahead of Apple ($3.78T USD) and Alphabet ($3.61T USD), Google's parent company - NVIDIA has become a giant in just a few years. Artificial intelligence has considerably boosted its stock market performance, and today everyone is snapping up the chips from the company founded by Jensen Huang, the best for AI calculations. So much so, in fact, that NVIDIA makes far more money from this sector than from its original domain, video games.
As we reported just a few days ago, the data center division accounted for $62.3 billion in sales in the fourth quarter of 2025, while the gaming division accounted for $3.7 billion. Naturally, NVIDIA's attention is focused on its data center customers. This is a fact not to be overlooked when reading the latest study published by Jon Peddie Research (JPD) on the graphics card sector.
JPD first looks at the graphics card sector as a whole, highlighting the very good start to 2025 (thanks to AI), while the end is less glorious. Over one year, we're talking aboutan increase in sales (by volume) of around 36%. On the other hand, for the fourth quarter of 2025 alone, we're talking about a 4.4% drop compared to the same quarter in 2024, proof that the market is turning around. As JPD sees it, 2026 is likely to be far less glorious than 2025, and the conclusions drawn from the last twelve months are not set in stone. Still, it's hard to see how NVIDIA could lose its crown.
Indeed, if we focus on the three players in the graphics card market, we can see that the distribution is, as always, very uneven. Well, no, not as always, as things are actually becoming more pronounced. In the fourth quarter of 2024, NVIDIA was a comfortable leader with 84% market share. AMD was a solid second with 15%, and Intel was barely around 1%. In the third quarter of 2025 - when sales were at their peak - NVIDIA accounted for 92% of the graphics card market, while AMD fell to 7% and Intel held on to its 1% share. Finally, as the decline in shipments begins, the fourth quarter of 2025 confirms NVIDIA's overwhelming dominance: 94% market share, with AMD down to 5% and Intel remaining at 1%. Monopoly situation, you say?
