Microsoft is beginning to roll out the Cloud Rebuild feature to users' computers, allowing them to reinstall the OS from the Internet.
This news item is shorter than usual, but the information is no less important—especially when it comes to reinstalling Windows 11. It’s true that, thanks to Microsoft’s progress, reinstalling the operating system is much less common than it used to be—and anyone who’s been around since the days of Windows Me (no, that doesn’t make us any younger) wouldn’t argue otherwise! However, there are times when nothing works anymore, when there’s no solution available other than a complete reinstallation of the entire system. This is a necessary step made all the more difficult by the fact that Microsoft often required it to be done from a USB drive.
However, for several months now, Microsoft has been testing a feature called Cloud Rebuild, and it’s even been available to many users for a little while. Cloud Rebuild is an incredibly handy tool because it lets you skip the reinstallation phase without needing a USB drive. All you need is a working internet connection for the system to install itself remotely. Clubic reports that—good news—this feature is now being rolled out to the general public. Cloud Rebuild arrived on our systems with update KB5127936, though this update is optional.
The Cloud Rebuild feature has also been enhanced with a few new options, such as one that enables secure data erasure and, as Clubic notes, “the ability for IT administrators to trigger a remote reinstallation.” These are all very practical new features that allow you to reinstall Windows 11 via the Internet using the Windows RE recovery environment, by restarting in Safe Mode, or, finally, through the system settings if your Windows system is still functional but behaving erratically. Please note that this optional update, KB5127936, is not automatically installed by the OS. It will be included in the Patch Tuesday release on November 10.
