Steam: head-turning figures
No less than 100 exabytes delivered to users by the Steam platform in 2025. Exabytes?!
Every year, Valve publishes a kind of state-of-the-art report on its platform under the evocative name of " Steam's Year 2025 Review ". It's a particularly interesting report because, not content with being the forerunner of PC gaming platforms, Steam is also the undisputed number one, and when you look at the figures Valve puts forward, it's easy to see why. Before we get into the numbers, however, Valve takes a look back at its most recent announcements, and takes the opportunity to talk again about the Steam Machine, Steam Controller and Steam Frame, products which, alas, still have no firm release date.
Valve goes on to praise its community. The company talks about the importance of Steam events, which numbered 436,592 throughout 2025 for a total of 3.13 billion views. Yes, billion. That said, it's hardly surprising when you consider the number of gamers who use the platform every day. Valve explains it very well: " Five years ago, Steam experienced steady growth and passed the 25 million simultaneous connections mark for the first time. In the years that followed, we grew by around 3.4 million additional simultaneous connections per year, reaching a peak of 42 million simultaneous users. "
Finally, and perhaps most impressively, Valve looks back at the data transferred over the year as a whole: " In 2024, we delivered around 80 exabytes to our customers, and by 2025, that figure had risen to 100 exabytes. It's hard to imagine such a huge figure, but let's give it a try: Steam users download an average of 274 petabytes of installations and updates daily, or 11.42 petabytes per hour, or around 190,000 gigabytes of data per minute! "
Here, it's interesting to note that, despite the somewhat skewed perception of Steam in France, the North American and European markets are not the most important for Valve. Worse still, these markets are declining, while the number-one region is still growing between 2024 and 2025. This market is Asia, and it will account for 32.2% of the bandwidth consumed on Steam in July 2025, after representing 30.4% in July 2024. It should be pointed out that Valve does not clearly define the term Asia, and that the platform's statistics also refer to the Near East, South Asia and Southeast Asia. In other words, "Asia" may well only include China, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan.
