The new Steam Controller at $99? That doesn't bode well for the Steam Machine.

Valve's mini-PC is one of this year's most eagerly-awaited hardware releases.

Last November, Valve presented its three next hardware releases. A comprehensive presentation of the Steam Machine, Steam Frame and Steam Controller, but since then it's been pretty quiet. There have been rumors of various kinds to try and estimate, essentially, the price of the Steam Machine, but that's about it. In fact, while these various devices are eagerly awaited by fans, we're still without news of a launch date or pricing. Well, we were without news, we should say, because in the space of a few days, things have changed, at least as far as the Steam Controller is concerned.

TechyTalk was among the first to try out the Steam Controller © TechyTalk

First there was the discovery made by a certain Brad Lynch who, on the SteamDB databases, noticed Valve's upload of a video with a title that couldn't be more specific: " steam_controller_unboxing_2026 ". A video that cannot yet be viewed, but which leaves little doubt as to Valve's intentions: the Steam Controller is about to be released. Given the complementary nature of the Steam Controller and Steam Machine, it's fair to assume that once the controller is on the market, the Steam Machine won't be far behind. Well, it might be even closer than you think.

Indeed, a few days ago, a video leaked. A "preview" video, as we say in the jargon: the YouTube channel TechyTalk was apparently able to try out this Steam Controller and, in four minutes, gives some impressions. There's talk of gyroscopes, additional buttons on the back of the controller and the absence of a jack plug, but above all there's talk of price: at the end of the video, TechyTalk states that Valve will be marketing its controller at a price of $99. In absolute terms, this is already relatively expensive, but it's also double the price of the first version of the Steam Controller launched in 2015. Even Valve's new controller is more richly endowed than this first version, so it's hard not to be a little disappointed by such inflation, and let's hope above all that the Steam Machine's price doesn't mirror that of the controller.
