Ryzen 9 9950X3D2: an overpriced CPU monster
Around 29% more expensive than the Ryzen 9 9950X3D for barely 10% higher performance: not a very profitable Ryzen 9 9950X3D2?
We've been talking about it for months. It's been the subject of rumors for months, but AMD has never deigned to make its existence official. This is the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 microprocessor, which the American company has had in the pipeline since at least the end of last year, but which was finally delayed to make way for the Ryzen 7 9850X3D launched in February. A few weeks ago, however, the timetable for the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 accelerated. First, indiscretions were made to a few journalists who were told that it was "not yet time to unveil this chip". Then it was ASRock who beat AMD to the punch by confirming the chip's existence. Finally, it was AMD who said that the processor is scheduled to go on sale on April 22.
Two unknowns remained: the actual performance of this very special chip and, of course, its price. For the first, we'll have to wait and see. AMD has released a few graphics confirming that the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 will be more or less 10% faster than the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, but we shouldn't put too much faith in this kind of "infomercial". AMD is a bit of a judge and jury here. As for the second unknown factor... well, it's no longer an unknown factor, or only in terms of the chip's retail price in France. AMD has declared that the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 will be sold for $899. That's 29% more than the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, launched at $699 just over a year ago.
As usual, AMD only gives a price in dollars. To get an idea of the price at French retailers, you need to add value-added tax and a little "bonus" with the exchange rate. All in all, there's a good chance that the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 and its 192 MB third-level cache will be sold for over 1,000 euros in France. Yes, it does sting a little.
