Biwin CL100: the SSD in "smaller than small" format is now on sale
We're exaggerating a little, as the tiny SSD is currently only available in China, but it's on its way...
In the vast majority of PCs, whether desktops, laptops or minis, the SSD has become the storage unit par excellence. Its responsiveness, compactness and absence of mechanical parts have made it the component of choice for replacing traditional platter-type hard disks, despite its incomparably higher cost per gigabyte. Initially in 2.5-inch format, SSDs have become even more compact with the advent of the M.2 format, which takes up little more space than a RAM strip, while capacities can reach up to 8TB (but at what a price!).
That wasn't enough for some manufacturers, however, and in the late spring of 2025, Chinese company Biwin promoted a new, even more compact format. Dubbed "mini-SSD", this format implies the use of a new connector, but the product is so tiny that there's a good chance the entire industry will end up adopting it: it would particularly fit into the world of smartphones or the most compact laptops, as it's so close to the dimensions of a simple microSD card. The first model presented by Biwin is 17 mm long, 15 mm wide and 1.4 mm thick. It also weighs just one gram!
The CL100 - the name of the only model currently launched by Biwin - doesn't let itself be outdone, however, and boasts very interesting data rates of 3700 MB/s sequential read and 3400 MB/s sequential write. Performance far superior to even the best microSD cards, which struggle to reach 1000 MB/s. What's more, despite the compactness of its product, Biwin is able to offer capacities from 512 GB to 2 TB and, above all, prices are not outrageous: on the Chinese market, we're talking about 599 yuan (512 GB), 1,099 yuan (1 TB) and 2,199 yuan (2 TB), i.e. 73 euros, 134 euros and 268 euros respectively in direct conversion.
