An AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 for the most powerful handheld console ever produced
GPD to integrate the most powerful AMD chipset with integrated graphics... for an absolutely stunning handheld console?
The Chinese brand GPD is probably not the best-known manufacturer of handheld consoles in Europe. However, the company has found its audience - in China of course, but also in the United States and even on the Old Continent - thanks to products that stand out from the ordinary. The company was one of the first to launch a handheld console with a sliding screen to reveal a full keyboard. The machine in question was christened GPD Win, and the concept endured over the years until the release of GPD Win 4, equipped in its latest variant with an AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 or Ryzen 7 8840U processor.
In either case, the power was there, but that's nothing compared to what's in store with the forthcoming release of the GPD Win 5. Taking advantage of the Chinajoy 2025 event, which kicks off on August 1, GPD will indeed be presenting this new version, but one of GPD's influencer partners - The Phawx - has somehow let the cat out of the bag by revealing most of the console's technical specifications, and... it's a big one! For a start, we're no longer talking about the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 or the Ryzen 7 8840: this time, the choice is between the Ryzen AI 385 and the Ryzen AI Max+ 395. The latter is a real monster, with no less than 16 CPU cores and 81.25 MB of combined cache!
The Ryzen's integrated graphics solution is also very important on a gaming console. It's a Radeon 8060S with a maximum of 40 compute units, and everything suggests that GPD has decided to integrate the most complete version. These processing units (or GPU cores) will obviously not be in short supply for the most demanding games, and to put their money where their mouth is, GPD has posted a short video of Black Myth: Wukong at over 200 frames per second on X.com. Before we get carried away, it's worth remembering that we have no details on the graphics settings used for this demonstration.
Another useful piece of information to temper our enthusiasm is that the GPD Win 5 doesn't feature an OLED panel, even though the screen finally benefits from a 7-inch diagonal. This is a first for a Win GPD. It's also worth noting that GPD has opted for an exclusively external battery to ensure proper cooling and, no doubt, decent autonomy: either plug the console into the mains, or take on an extra battery pack to play on the move. Last but not least, the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370-based GPD Win 4 was already priced at over $1,300: all the signs are that this new model should be closer to $2,000!
