Windows 11 on AMD Ryzen processor: soon no more performance problems?
This is an embarrassing problem for Microsoft and AMD, while Ryzen is gradually gaining market share over Intel.
The release of Windows 11 - officially launched on October 5th - went rather well for an operating system distributed so soon after its announcement. The deployment started without too many problems for the majority of eligible users and Microsoft is proceeding in successive waves to offer the Windows 10 update to Windows 11 through its Windows Update service. As soon as you are concerned, your OS will let you know with a small notification.
So everything would be fine in the best of worlds if a thorn had not crept into Microsoft's side. A thorn that we'll call Ryzen, after the popular AMD line of processors. Indeed, since the launch of Windows 11, users of Ryzen platforms have had to deal with lower-than-expected performance. Of course, the system is operational, but depending on the configuration and the applications used, the performance losses are estimated at 3 to 5%, and can be as high as 10 to 15% in video games.
For the time being, neither Microsoft nor AMD have tried to minimize the problems, even if we are surprised that this was not identified during the multiple beta phases. The problem is that the first patch deployed by Microsoft tended to make things worse and the editor was forced to "correct the situation" by quickly proposing the KB5006746 update which, although optional, solves some of the problems. On its side, AMD released a new version of its chipset drivers (3.10.08.506) and we could hope that the problems would be behind us.
In reality, the thing is more complex than it seems, and some users still seem to have problems. Proof of this is the very recent release of a second update for AMD's chipset drivers which, however, has not yet been deployed by AMD itself. To get it, you have to contact your motherboard manufacturer, but not all of them are concerned: does this mean that the problems encountered on the Ryzen platform affect certain manufacturers more? However, at Asus or MSI, it is now possible to download the 3.10.22.706 chipset drivers, which address a system adjustment error when virtualization-based security (VBS) is activated.
